Combined cycle package boosts Saarbruecken's district heating supply

Faced with a steadily increasing demand for district heating service, the public utilities in the German city of Saarbruecken have installed an Alsthom-built GE Frame 5 combined-cycle package at their central heating and power plant. A research study had shown that, technically and economically, the combined-cycle gas/steam turbine, operating on natural gas or oil, offered the best choice of plant for the extension, for the following reasons: very short gas-turbine start-up time; optimum adoption to demand for both electric power and heat; minimum land requirement; 40 percent lower demand for cooling water than a condensing turbine producing only electricity; very high overall efficiency (80 percent) when supplying heat to the district heating system and high efficiency (39.03 percent on oil) for electricity production only, which is almost as good as the best that can be obtained with the large modern condensing sets; and package design, offering short delivery and installation times. The plant is the first of its kind in Europe to operate on a combined district heating and power scheme, and the ECC has approved the use of natural gas for this type of scheme. (MCW)
