National patterns of R and D resources: funds and manpower in the United States, 1953--1975
This report contains information from a series of National Science Foundation surveys. It provides a summary of the allocation of R and D funding and manpower among the four sectors of the economy--Federal government, industry, universities and colleges, and other nonprofit institutions. R and D funding data include basic research, applied research, and development and cover the period 1953-1975. Time series on R and D scientific and engineering manpower employed by each sector are presented. A summary of the data indicate total R and D spending in the U.S. to be projected at $34.3 billion in 1975, 7 percent above 1974; the U.S. is expected to devote 2.3 percent of its GNP to R and D activities; the Federal government will support 53 percent of the total R and D effort in 1975; basic research is estimated at $4.1 billion; and nearly 58,000 scientists and engineers were employed on full-time-equivalent basis on R and D activities in 1974.
