Although failures of generator retaining rings are relatively rare events, considerable damage would result from a catastrophic failure. The susceptibility of 18Mn5Cr generator retaining rings material to stress corrosion cracking, characterized by relatively rapid crack initiation and growth rates when exposed to a hostile operating environment, has created the need for periodic nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of retaining rings. Visual, liquid penetrant, eddy current, and ultrasonic inspection techniques can be used to detect stress corrosion cracking. This paper will describe ultrasonic and eddy current techniques evaluated by the EPRI NDE Center.
