Mauna Loa eruption predicted before mid-78

Journal Article · · Geotherm. Energy Mag.; (United States)
OSTI ID:7263448

A report prepared by scientists of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory predicting this eruption is discussed at length. The reasons why the Mauna Loa eruption of July 5-6, 1975 is regarded as a precursor of a much larger eruption from one of the volcano's rift zones are reviewed. The USGS believes that countermeasures to the potential threats posed by a Mauna Loa eruption can be planned. It is recommended that contingency plans for lava flow diversion be prepared in advance.
