Nature of the halos of spiral galaxies

Journal Article · · Sov. Astron. Lett. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:7263370

The hypothesis that the massive, highly extended halos around spiral galaxies are composed of hot ionized gas probably conflicts both with soft x-ray observations of the background and of M31, and with the estimated flux of ultraviolet halo radiation derived from the circumstance that neutral hydrogen is present at the periphery of M31. If the halos instead have a stellar composition, then the solar neighborhood ought to contain halo stars (probably dwarfs and subdwarfs of spectral type M5 or later) with a number density of approximately 10/sup -2/ pc/sup -3/.
