Arctic petroleum exploration has moved offshore into the ice-covered waters of the Beaufort Sea. Artificial earth-fill islands have been used successfully as temporary shallow-water drilling platforms. This paper describes the planning, design, and unique construction methods used in building islands that must withstand the severe climate of the Arctic and forces caused by moving ice.
