Its role fulfills a four-part mission to perform innovative multi-disciplinary research in the national interest in energy sciences and technology, high-energy and nuclear physics, and environment and health, to develop and operate unique national experimental facilities for use by qualified investigators, to educate and train future generations of scientists and engineers, and to foster the transfer of technology to US industry.
