Computerization: Problems and solutions
- SETPOINT Inc., Houston, TX (United States)
Successful operation of hydrocarbon processing industry (HPI) plants during the 1990s will depend on the ability of companies to use computers more extensively with smaller internal staffs. The immediate challenge is how to take that direction with minimum disruption to the benefits-producing legacy systems already in place. The HPI has a multitude of applications for computers. Islands of automation exist in essentially every plant. The most dominant HPI applications, in terms of impact and tangible benefits, are advanced control systems (APC). APC traditionally derives its benefits from increased capacity utilization, improved recovery of more valuable products, and increased efficiency. Whereas automation projects of the 80s were justified based on business opportunity, the legislated requirements for reformulated gasoline, environmental protection and health and safety management are imposing computer solutions as a cost of doing business. Documentation, system maintenance and system integration requirements in support of these new requirements are major items contributing to these new costs. Computer solutions offer refiners one of the most cost effective means to rapidly adapt to the increasingly complex and changing business climate. The paper discusses these applications for computerization.
