Photoproduction of ultraviolet emission lines

In this note, it is pointed out that removal of inner electrons by photoionization can produce ultraviolet emission lines of observable intensity. In the case of C(+) + h(nu) = more than C(2+) + e, ionization by photons with energies greater than 31 eV produces ions which then preferentially populate the excited C III 3P state. Calculations show that photoproduction of lines such as C III 1909 A can be competitive with collisional excitation in low-temperature, low-ionization nebulae such as H II regions, and could affect abundance or ionization studies. In general, this production mechanism should be considered whenever the ultraviolet lines have intensities a few tens of percent of H-beta. 23 references.
