Vibration and stress have been analyzed in hydrogen quench line piping in a typical petrochemical plant. On-site vibration and pressure pulse measurements were taken over the range of operating conditions for the plant, and analyses carried out for these conditions. The analyses were done in accordance with ANSI B31.1, supplemented with fatigue analyses. The piping in the petrochemical plants is normally designed to ANSI B31.1 requirements. But certain piping in the plants needs an additional assessment of the vibration loads to ensure an adequate fatigue life of the piping systems. The sources of such vibrations can be mechanical (i.e., compressors) or from the acoustical effects. The results of the analyses and the on-site measurements, along with recommendations, are presented.
