Thermal stability of an advanced high speed aircraft alloy

The metastable beta titanium alloys as a generic class exhibit ease of fabrication and attractive property combinations when compared with traditional titanium alloys such as Ti-6A1-4V. However, a concern with this type of alloy is thermal instability. The thermal stability of Beta III (Ti-11.5Mo-6Zr-4.5Sn) in three product forms--honeycomb, sheet and fastener stock--is characterized. After following recommended heat-treatment cycles, no thermal instability was found in the 400-600/sup 0/F (200-320/sup 0/C) temperature range. The alloy is thus a potential candidate for skin applications on advance higher speed aircrafts.
