Ultrasonic inspection of austenitic steels raises many problems, because the propagation of ultrasound can be greatly disrupted by the anisotropy of the metallurgical structure. It is therefore often difficult to detect, locate and size flaws contained in welds of this type. In addition, the orientation of the dendrites consequently alters the way in which the ultrasonic beam is propagated. This propagation has been studied, making allowance for the various dendrite inclination, to better understand how the ultrasonic beam propagates through these steels. This paper sets out the initial experimental results obtained from specimens of 316L welded austenitic stainless steel. These are compared with results obtained by modeling.
