The potential rupture of seam-welded steam lines is one of the most important safety concerns of today`s fossil power industry. EPRI developed comprehensive guidelines on the nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of longitudinally welded steam pipes, following two such failures in 1985 and 1986, that allowed utilities to implement reliable inspection programs. Several events have occurred since the development of the guidelines in February 1987 that necessitate revisiting this issue. This paper discusses the results of a recent survey of industry experiences with seamwelded pipe inspections and presents an approach for future investigations.
