The Steam Generators (S.G) and Pressurizer in the Sizewell ``B`` reactor are classed as Incredibility of Failure (IOF) components. Consequently all the welds and nozzle inner radii are subject to Pre-Service Inspection (PSI). It is intended that these components will be periodically inspected over the life of the plant (ISI) using the PSI inspection techniques. The inspection techniques, the operators, and the equipment used are subject to an independent validation at the Inspection Validation Center (IVC) of AEA Technology Risley. The ultrasonic inspections are fully automated. All the inspections are being carried out from the outside surface. The inspection targets are defects 10mm through wall {times} 20mm long. The defects to be detected are ultrasonically smooth or rough and have orientations within 10 degrees of the radial--axial plane of the nozzle. i.e., 10 degrees tilt and 0 degrees skew, 0 degrees tilt and 10 degrees skew or their vectorial sum. OIS are contracted to undertake the PSI for the plant owner Nuclear Electric (NE). The technique development and proving trails and the validation experience to date is described in the paper.
