In a process for the production of hydrogen and sulfur from hydrogen sulfide, the improvement comprises: (1) bringing hydrogen sulfide into contact with at least one member selected from the group consisting of the sulfides of molybdenum, and ruthenium at a temperature of from 450/sup 0/ to 800/sup 0/C thereby giving rise to a gaseous mixture consisting of hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen and sulfur; (2) cooling the said gaseous mixture thereby condensing the sulfur component of the said mixture and separating and obtaining elementary sulfur; (3) circulating back to the step (1) above the gaseous mixture remaining after removal of sulfur; (4) subjecting the circulated gaseous mixture to the steps (2) and (3) above continuously and recurrently for thereby forming a gaseous mixture having an increased hydrogen content and (5) separating the hydrogen component from the gaseous mixture having an increased hydrogen content.
