A test specimen for measuring the shear strength of structural adhesives has been evaluated analytically and experimentally. This specimen consists of two interlocking cylindrical adherends bonded together in an overlap region with the adhesive. The specimen is loaded to failure in axial tension. The shear and normal stress distributions throughout the adhesive layer were determined as a function of adherend radius and adhesive thickness by finite element techniques. These results indicate that the maximum values of stress concentration occur at the interface between the inner adherend and the adhesive layer.
