Radioisotope techniques for problem-solving in industrial process plants

Book ·
OSTI ID:7255472
This book explains radioisotope techniques used to quickly detect pipeline and process problems, from malfunctions in specific vessels to poor overall plant performance. It shows how to apply these techniques to solve problems with blocks, leaks, flow and level measurement, and corrosion. These techniques are particularly useful in large, continuously running plants where it is important to avoid shut-downs. After describing the use of radiostopes in industry and the basic physics of radioactivity, the book goes on to discuss radiation detection, radioactive sources, biological effects of radiation, and radiological protection. It also covers radioactive tracer applications, measurements of flow using radioactive tracers, measurement of residence times and residence-time distributions, and leak detection. Finally it includes miscellaneous radiotracer applications, sealed-source applications, gamma-ray absorption, radioisotope scattering, and neutron techniques.
