Catalytic properties of oxidized charcoals in hydrolysis reactions. Relationship between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis

This paper presents a general mechanism for the acid hydrolysis of ethyl acetate and sucrose in the presence of 24 differently prepared oxidized charcoals and, for comparison, sulfonated cation-exchange resins and hydrochloric acid. The catalytic activity of the oxidized charcoals may be described by a three-parameter equation taking account of the acid and structural features of the catalysts. The applicability of the Michaelis-Menten equation was demonstrated and an explanation of the parameters of this equation for the catalysts examined was given.
