This paper presents a kinetic and mechanistic study of the oxidation of benzyl alcohol and cumene and the cooxidation of these two substances in a dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) medium. It has been shown that the DMSO, while it is not cooxidized with the other two compounds, increases the rates of their oxidation and cooxidation. A formal kinetic analysis has been made of the process of cooxidation of benzyl alcohol with cumene in mixtures rich in the alcohol component, where the cooxidation rate is a linear function of the composition. The parameters of cooxidation of benzyl alcohol with cumene have been determined in mixtures with and without the DMSO.
