Kinetics of the photochemical reaction of formaldehyde with chlorine in the presence of O/sub 2/ or NO
This paper presents a study on the kinetics of the photochemical reaction of formaldehyde with molecular chlorine at 3660 A in the presence of oxygen or nitric oxide. The ratio of the rate constants of the reactions yielding the peroxyformyl radical H(C = O)O/sub 2/ and the hydroperoxyl radical HO/sub 2/ (9.2 + or - 1.8) was found for the reaction of the formyl radical with oxygen which proceeds by two pathways. The rate constant for the reaction of the formyl radical with molecular chlorine was determined at 295 K ((2.2 + or - 0.6) X 10/sup -11/ cm/sup 3//sec). A mechanism was proposed for the formation of peroxyacetyl nitrate through radicals HCE and HCO/sub 3/ upon the photooxidation of formaldehyde.
