Photon-stimulated desorption of neutral O/sub 2/ from YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/. sqrt. /sub x/ by core-level excitation

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter; (United States)
We report the first observations of synchrotron-radiation induced, photon-stimulated desorption (PSD) of a neutral molecule (O/sub 2/) from a surface by core-level excitation. The PSD yield of O/sub 2/ from YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/..sqrt../sub x/ was monitored as a function of photon energy in the range 60--140 eV; thresholds were observed corresponding to excitation of Cu(3p) and Ba(4d) core levels. Production of O/sub 2/ at the Cu(3p) edge involves excitation of shake-up or electron correlation states, while PSD at the Ba(4d) edge appears to involve excitation of localized B/sup 2 +/ states.
