This patent describes a process for catalytic solvent refining of coal at a temperature above 400/sup 0/C. in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogen donor solvent. The improvement described here comprises the use of a catalyst which consists of: (a) copper or a compound thereof, and (b) a Group VI or non-ferrous Group VIII metal, or a compound of either.
