Development of novel fluorine combustion procedures for elemental coal analysis

A novel system for elemental analysis was developed, whereby an organic species (coal) is completely combusted in a high pressure fluorine atmosphere. The excess fluorine is removed by a reduction with elemental mercury, and the remaining gas (typically composed of varying amounts of carbon tetrafluoride, carbonyl fluoride, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen fluoride) is analyzed with a mass spectrometer. The combustion data is then compared to a model, constructed from a similar gas mixture of known composition. Data from the model is used to establish the relative amounts of each component present in the present in the combustion mixture. From the relative amounts of each component present, the ratios of oxygen to carbon, nitrogen to carbon, and sulfur to carbon are calculated. The method also includes the gravimetric determination of hydrogen using sodium fluoride. Hydrogen is recovered as the bifluoride.
