Amidst the recent progress in improving the ductility of intermetallic compounds, another problem is beginning to emerge; viz., the degradation of both ductility and strength by a notch. The problem is important because, from a practical point of view, notches in other than laboratory specimens are difficult to avoid. They may even be part of the design. Here, the notch-sensitivity of the ductile L1{sub 2} aluminides Ni-rich Ni{sub 3}Al doped with boron and Zr{sub 3}Al is attributed to the triaxial tensile state of stress induced by a notch.
