It is generally accepted that the sulfur heterocycles are the most refractory forms of sulfur in fossil fuels. The recent surge of interest in coordination chemistry of thiophenes is due to the growing recognition of this situation. Of the thiophenes found in fossil fuels, benzo-, and dibenzothiophene derivatives are much more prevalent than alkylthiophenes. This point is important since, as they show in this paper, the organometallic chemistries of benzothiophene and thiophene are very different.
