Several models have been developed in the last decade to estimate carbon monoxide hot spot conditions at congested traffic locations. The models differ in their analysis of vehicle emission rates and in the procedures used to describe the spatial distribution of emissions along intersection roadway segments. Four representative approaches (IMM, MICRO2, TEXIN2, and CALINE4) are reviewed in this paper. All four models combined data from vehicle testing programs or emission rate models that do not share a common structural or functional basis. Consequently, the emissions adjustment procedures in IMM, MICRO2, TEXIN2, and CALINE4 must be used with caution. This paper suggests an alternative emissions analysis procedure that is more consistent with the data and internal structure of the MOBILE series of vehicle emission rate models. This simple emissions analysis procedure can be used with standard line source models to estimate intersection air quality conditions.
