Gold powder was mixed with YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}} superconductors for the purpose of increasing the critical current density ({ital J}{sub {ital c}}). The critical transition temperature at zero resistance ({ital T}{sup zero}{sub {ital c}}) gradually decreased by the Au addition. However, the depression of {ital T}{sup zero}{sub {ital c}} was as low as 2 K for the YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}} -Au composite with Au mixing up to 40 wt.%. A maximum {ital J}{sub {ital c}} of 307 A/cm{sup 2} was obtained for the Au 5-wt. % mixed composite. The {ital J}{sub {ital c}} was about four times as high as that for YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}} without Au mixing. In addition to the {ital J}{sub {ital c}} enhancement, the weak-link problem was appreciably improved by the Au addition.
