A synthetic CO[sub 2] acceptor is described consisting essentially of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of calcium oxide and calcium carbonate supported in a refractory carrier matrix, the carrier having the general formula Ca[sub 5](SiO[sub 4])[sub 2]CO[sub 3]. A method for producing the synthetic CO[sub 2] acceptor is also disclosed. 2 figs.
