NREL helps to envision the utilities of the future

The inroads made by solar thermal electric, photovoltaics (PV), and wind energy systems into the empires of today's electric are not long or well traveled. However, the concept of distributed utilities (DUs) may prove to be a practical and workable solution that will provide new market opportunities for distributors and manufacturers of solar and other small- to medium-sized power-generation systems. Since early 1992, electric power experts at the US Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have been collaborating with their counterparts at Pacific Gas Electric Company (PG E), the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) to envision the distributed utility of the future. As part of their work on the Distributed Utility Valuation Project, these experts are also assessing whether this utility concept can be made a reality.
