Standard method of test for alpha particle radioactivity of water

Alpha emitters having energies above 3.9 MeV and at activity levels above 0.5 pCi/ml of radioactively homogeneous water were determined. The test sample was reduced by evaporation or a suitable chemical method to the minimum weight of material having measurable ..cap alpha.. activity. The ..cap alpha.. radioactivity was measured by an instrument composed of a detecting device, amplifier, power supply, and scaler--the most widely used being proportional and scintillation counters. The standard deviation of the method is generally +- 5 percent. (BLM)
