Sandia has been working with various organizations in Mexico for more than a year to help support Mexican projects currently underway. These projects use renewable energy to bring electricity to rural Mexican communities needing power to improve their economic and social well-being. Under the National Solidarity Program, la Programa Nacional de Solidaridad (PRONSAL), a program for rural development, the government of Mexico has been using renewable energy technologies in rural electrification and development projects. Electrification is one of its major components, and renewable energy systems have been used to electrify a number of rural communities. The lessons and examples this program provides will be able to influence the rural electrification policies of other developing countries, particularly in Latin America. The US Department of Energy and US Agency for International Development are supporting Mexico's renewables program activities through a working-level cooperative program between the US and Mexico called PROCER. Specific areas of cooperation include information exchange on technical and commercial products, training, and technical assistance, resource assessment, market development, and work related to project financing. Sandia's role in PROCER is to provide technical oversight to the program on behalf of DOE/OSEC, CORECT, and AID/Mexico.
