This report discusses the control of nitrates in ground water. Ground water is the primary source of drinking water for most of the rural population and for as much as 50% of the urban population of the United States. Nitrates and other agricultural chemicals can accumulate in ground water beneath agricultural soils if improper soil and crop management practices are used, thereby creating potential health hazards. Modes of chemical introduction into the soil are presented. Results from experiments of crop yield versus fertilizer application are presented.
