In alloys showing a Portevin-Le Chatelier effect (PLC) serrated flow curves are indicative of dynamic strain aging (DSA). In certain regimes of temperature and strain rate the flow curves are partially smooth. Strain rate change tests and static strain aging (SSA) performed in these regions show that the aging processes which cause the PLC effect are also active in the regions of stable deformation. In these experiments the effect of aging in producing a stress increment [Delta][sigma] is measured as a function of the aging time t[sub a]. A number of models have been designed, based on diffusion and drift of solutes in the stress field of dislocations in order to explain the various time dependencies found. In the present paper an attempt is made to provide a general basis for the description of strain aging kinetics.
