In this paper, the authors report a successful fabrication of C[sub 70]-doped silica solid gel via the sol-gel technique. The sol-gel process is a technique that can be used to prepare transparent oxide glasses by hydrolysis and condensation of alkoxide precursors. Little or no heating is required, and consequently the gel can be doped with molecules whose poor thermal stability precludes their incorporation in traditional inorganic hosts. Such organic molecules may become entrapped in the growing covalent gel network rather than being chemically bound to the inorganic matrix. The processes can be usually divided into the following steps: (1) preparation of the solution, (2) gelation, (3) aging, and (4) drying.
