A survey of fusion activities in Europe serves as a companion to an article printed earlier in the June issue. The survey covers the Joint European Torus (JET) as a the center of interest in the coordinated European Economic Community (EEC) fusion research program. The plasma current in JET exceeds the design level of 4.8 MA for periods of one second. There is general satisfaction that the first units have gone into operation smoothly, although, as with other tokamaks, JET has experienced the effect of containment degradation with the application of additional heat. The next European Torus (NET) will test engineering and technology under reactor conditions. The review discuss the Tore Supra and upgrades, the development of heating systems in the tokamaks, and alternative magnetic systems. 1 figure, 1 table.
