Design of ductile Ni{sub 3}Al being two phase with NiBe
- Tokyo Inst. of Tech., Nagatsuta, Yokohama (Japan)
In order to provide ductility to polycrystalline L1{sub 2} Ni{sub 3}Al intermetallic compound, an alloy design is attempted to introduce B2 NiBe phase into the microstructure in the ternary Ni-Al-Be system. Examination of several ternary alloys by optical microscopy and differential thermal analysis reveals the liquidus surface in the Ni-rich portion of the ternary system and then the reaction scheme to form Ni solid solution, Ni{sub 3}Al, NiAl and NiBe phases is suggested. Results of compression tests on the Ni{sub 3}Al/NiBe two phase alloys show that good compressive ductility is obtained at all the test temperatures ranging from 77 K to 1,273 K with a comparable 0.2% flow stress at 1,273 K with commercial Ni-base superalloys. In particular, an alloy with 20 at%Al and 10 at%Be is found to be cold rolled to 40% reduction in thickness.
