The response matrix [ital A] is defined by the equation [ital [rvec X]]=[ital A][rvec ]gQ, where [rvec ]gQ is the kick vector and [ital [rvec X]] is the resulting orbit vector. Since [ital A] is not necessarily a symmetric or even a square matrix we symmetrize it by using [ital A][sup [ital T]] [ital A]. Then we find the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of this [ital A][sup [ital T]] [ital A] matrix. The physical interpretation of the eigenvectors for circular machines is discussed.
