Reaction of NiCl{sub 2}, PPh{sub 3} and Na{sub 2}edt (edt{sup 2{minus}} = SCH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}S{sup 2{minus}}) in methanol gives rise to the cleavage of the C-S bond in edt and a new nickel(II) complex, Ni(PPh{sub 3})(tpdt)(tpdt{sup 2{minus}} = SCH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}SCH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}S{sup 2{minus}}). The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2{sub 1}/n with a = 9.383(4), b = 16.390(4), c = 14.177(4) {angstrom} {beta} = 102.75(3){degree}, V = 2,125.2 {angstrom}{sup 3}, Z = 4; M{sub r} = 473.30; D{sub c} = 1.479 gcm{sup {minus}3}; F(000) = 984; {mu} = 12.79 cm{sup {minus}1}. Final R is 0.052 for 2,017 observed reflections. The nickel atom is four-coordinated with a distorted square-planar geometry with Ni-S distances in the range 2.150 - 2.180 {angstrom} and with Ni-P equal to 2.187 {angstrom}.
