Scientists at the University of Texas have a $100,000 contract with Mobil Oil Corp., Continental Oil Co., Texas Utilities Services Co., and NSF-RANN under which laboratory and process development units will be built, followed by field testing at a site with good production potential. Deep-basin lignite lies roughly 100 miles inland and generally parallel to the Gulf Coast. Total reserves are estimated at over 100 billion tons. Researchers have started out by seeking answers to such questions as the rock mechanics and subsidence properties of Texas lignite, combustion and gasification kinetics, heat transfer effects, and the utilization of low-Btu gas in turbines at the site.
