Loy Yang is the latest power project proposed for the Latrobe Valley and the biggest, with two 2000-MW plants to be built on the edge of a massive new open-cast brown coal mine. As such it has successfully passed one of the most extensive and demanding environmental impact investigations ever conducted in Australia. The proposed plant would consist of a 2000-MW station to be developed between 1983 and 1988, followed by a second 2000-MW stage from 1989 to 1992. It would be a base load plant and its development timing could be altered in line with any unexpected change in demand.
