A conceptual design of a US Department of Transportation (DOT) type-B transuranic (TRU) waste transportation container has been developed for use at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) repository. The modular TRU waste (MTW) container is designed to reduce transportation risks through 30% better utilization of the inside cavity capacity compared to the current TRUPACT II model, and its modular design allows for the transportation of untreated and treated contact-handled (CH) TRU waste, as well as remotely handled (RH) TRU canisters. The capacity of the MTW container is 54 untreated CH-TRU drums, 12 treated CH-TRU drums, one 3,624-kg (8,000 lb), or two 2,900-kg (6,400-lb) RH-TRU canisters. Emphasis in this paper is on CH-TRU design characteristics.
