Absorption of ordinary electromagnetic waves in the presence of fine-scale plasma stratification

The ordinary electromagnetic wave is intensely absorbed at fine-scale plasma inhomogeneities in the region in which this wave is reflected. The absorption is due to a linear conversion into resonant longitudinal waves of the medium. Results calculated for the anomalous absorption agree with results found from experiments involving vertical probing of the ionosphere. (AIP)
