Ionization-thermal instability in a glow-discharge plasma

Journal Article · · Sov. J. Plasma Phys. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:7236109
The ionization-thermal (superheating) instability is analyzed for the plasma of a self-maintained glow discharge. The discharge is assumed to be a volume discharge, convectively cooled. The threshold conditions are found for the onset of the instability, which causes the discharge to break up into filaments. The dimensions of the inhomogeneity of the medium, the pressure, and the mixture composition affect the maximum power which can be supplied. The growth time of the instability is found (tauapprox.10/sup -3/ sec). It is found that the discharge can exist without an external electrical resistance. (AIP)
