Stress, hydrogen segregation, and fracture in. cap alpha. -. beta. titanium alloys

Strain embrittlement in Ti base alloys during tensile testing was investigated. Results show that in an ..cap alpha..-..beta.. titanium alloy the local activity of H in alpha phase (..cap alpha../sub H//sup ..cap alpha..) increases and activity of H in beta phase (..cap alpha../sub H//sup ..beta..) decreases as the equiaxed ..cap alpha.. particle size decreases at constant volume fraction of phases. Thus with decreasing particle size there would be a tendency for H to move from ..cap alpha.. to ..beta.., decreasing the H content of ..cap alpha... Also whether H tended to move from ..beta.. to ..cap alpha.. or from ..cap alpha.. interiors to the ..cap alpha..-..beta.. interface this tendency would be reduced by surface tension effects, making the alloy less susceptible to embrittlement.
