ESR was used to study the free radicals produced in amobarbital by radiation at 77/sup 0/K and at room temperature. A single-crystal ESR analysis, together with crystal structure considerations, indicated that a free radical was created at room temperature by the removal of an isoamyl group from C(5) of the pyrimidine ring. Results at 77/sup 0/K indicated that a radical was formed by hydrogen abstraction from C(23), the ..omega..-1 carbon in the isoamyl group. A mechanism is discussed for the conversion of the radical type as the temperature is increased.
