Koppers Co. Inc.'s Koppers--Totzek coal-gasification process employs partial oxidation of pulverized coal in suspension with oxygen and steam at reaction temperatures from 3500/sup 0/F at the burner down to 2750/sup 0/F at the gas exit. No tars, condensable hydrocarbons, or phenols are formed, and the process is essentially pollution-free. The cleaned gas from the gasifier is a 300 Btu/cu ft fuel, or it can be processed into synthesis gas for making SNG or ammonia or hydrogen or alcohol or liquid hydrocarbons, or used as a reducing gas in blast furnaces. A grassroots plant to produce 250 million cu ft/day of SNG costs $350 million; outlet sales prices for gas per million Btu would be $1.35 with Western coal at $4/ton; $1.45 to $1.50 with Illinois coal at $7/ton; and $1.70 to $1.75 with Eastern coal at $10/ton.
