The most widely-referenced standards for turbine-generators in the United States are those published by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and those published by the international Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Although superficially similar, the two sets of standards have different and some times conflicting requirements. This paper will compare and contrast the requirements for several significant design parameters which are typically of interest to designers and customers. Both steam turbine generators and combustion turbine generators will be addressed. The applicable standards for turbine-generators have different formats, making a direct comparison difficult to perform, particularly in those instances where a parameter is stipulated in one set of standards, but not the other.
