Numerical solution of the neutron diffusion problem requires solving a linear system of equations such as Ax = b, where A is an n {times} n symmetric positive definite (SPD) matrix; x and b are vectors with n components. The preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) algorithm is an efficient iterative method for solving such a linear system of equations. In this paper, the authors describe the implementation of a parallel PCG algorithm on a shared memory machine (BBN TC2000) and on a distributed workstation (IBM RS6000) environment created by the parallel virtual machine parallelization software.
