South Coteau field

South Coteau field is part of a sophisticated stratigraphic play that exists in Mission Canyon carbonate buildups that rimmed the ancient Mississippian shoreline of the Williston basin. The reservoir is a high-energy, Bluell-Sherwood carbonate buildup, located along a northeast to southwest-trending structural nose. A permeability change laterally and updip to the northeast provides the trap. This change is the result of the higher energy facies grading into a lower energy lagoonal facies. Reservoir drive is solution-gas expansion. Producing porosities, which are fenestral, vugular, intergranular, and intrafragmental, range from 2 to 14%, with average permeabilities of 1 md. Reserves range from 100,000 to 250,000 bbl/well. The field, when totally developed, will probably exceed 2.5 million bbl of oil total reserves from 12 to 14 wells. Production in the field is presently from three horizons: Nesson, Bluell, and Sherwood, all in the upper Mission Canyon formation. Additional reserves exist in the Midale (Charles Formation). Well evaluation typically involves two cores, three or four drill-stem tests, and a full suite of wireline logs. With these data, evaluation is still quite complex. At drilling depths of less than 7000 ft, dry-hole costs below $150,000, are reserves averaging 160,000 bbl of oil/well, South Coteau-type prospects are still economically sound, even at current oil prices.
