Environmental interpretation and petroleum occurrence of Clinton section in Coshocton County, Ohio
The Lower Silurian Clinton section is characterized by intertonguing sandstone, siltstone, shale, and carbonate. Geophysical log data, representing 2000 wells, were collected to provide the basis for an interpretation of the depositional environments of this section. The depositional environments were inferred using a series of slice maps, each of which shows the geometry of deposition, in conjunction with total sand maps, clean sand maps, and isopach maps. In Coshocton County, the Clinton section was deposited in response to two major sedimentary processes. In the eastern townships, numerous east-west-trending sandstones are present, indicating that deposition was controlled by distributaries located on an upper delta plain. In the western townships, the distribution of sandstone resembles that of an offshore bar system. Previous investigations of the Clinton section indicate that the offshore bars and delta deposits extend into adjacent counties. Total sand maps and clean sand maps delineate areas of producing sandstone reservoirs. Production of oil and gas in Coshocton County has been concentrated in the north-trending thick sandstones associated with the offshore bars. Stratigraphic relationships are the dominant trapping mechanisms. However, the structural configuration is significant in determining the location and vertical segregation of hydrocarbons.
